21,595 Year Six pupils sit for UPSR in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: A total 21,595 Year Six pupils sat for their Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination in the state today.

State Education Department deputy director, Abdul Rashid Abdul Samad said from the number, 66 were special needs’ pupils.

“Among the special needs’ pupils, we have three Braille students, three short-sighted and three with moderate difficulties.

“There are also 17 students who took the examinations at several hospitals in the state,” he told the New Straits Times.

Abdul Rashid said the students who took the examinations in hospitals suffered from a range of illnesses, including fever.

He said a total 2,478 invigilators were stationed in examination centres around the state.

The UPSR examinations take place today and tomorrow before continuing again on Sept 11 and Sept 12 at 8,076 centres nationwide.

In a statement last week, the Education Ministry stated that a total of 445,641 candidates have registered to sit for the exam.

Of the total, 434,177 candidates are from government and government-aided schools while 11,464 are from private schools.
