Fire at Berjaya's Tioman Island resort

ROMPIN: Two buildings including a restaurant were damaged in a fire at the Berjaya Tioman Resort in Pulau Tioman, near here, early today.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the two buildings consisting eight rooms were completely razed during the 2.30am incident.

No injuries were reported during the fire.

He said five volunteer firefighters along with three firemen from the Tioman Airport were deployed to help put out the fire.

"Checks revealed the fire began from a guest room before it spread to nearby units including the karaoke room and restaurant.

"Twenty-five resorts staffs were also assisting the firefighters at the scene.

"The two building blocks consisting eight rooms were 100 percent damaged while the restaurant was 90 percent burnt. Firemen managed to control the fire from spreading to other areas and investigations are still being conducted at the scene," he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, Berjaya Tioman Resort on its Facebook page thanked the public for their concern over the fire incident saying the resort has resumed operations.

"Thank you for your concern on the fire incident at our resort this morning. It is unfortunate that our Sri Nelayan Restaurant and two chalets had caught fire. ...the situation is now under control, and all our guests as well as employees are safe.

"Thank you for all your care especially the assistance from the firemen. The resort is now back to normal operations," the statement read.
