NGO gives RM10K to Sabah Wildlife Dept over arrest of elephant killers

KOTA KINABALU: A UK-based non-governmental organisation has handed over a RM10,000 cheque to the Sabah Wildlife Department for the successful arrest and prosecution of the suspects behind the brutal killing of an elephant in Tawau.

The cash was on top of RM10,000 reward promised by the department to be paid as a reward to informers for assistance leading to the suspects' detention.

Orangutan Appeal UK chairperson,Datuk Susan Sheward handed over the cheque to the department's representative Dr Sen Nathan.

Sheward, fondly known as Sue, founded the organisation in 2000 for the rehabilitation and preservation of orangutans in Sabah.

To date, it has a support base of more than 30,000 people worldwide and has raised more than RM12 million.

Meanwhile, the six suspects including a foreigner had their remand order extended until Saturday to assist investigations under Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997.
