GEORGE TOWN: The rubbish truck driver Mukhtar Bahar, 62, who sustained serious injuries after he was hit by a car at Jalan Anson here early yesterday, had his left leg amputated below the knee.
Confirming this, outgoing northeast district police Assistant Commissioner Che Zaimani Che Awang said medical personnel could not save the leg.
"The victim is in a stable condition after surgery at the Penang Hospital," he said.
Mukhtar was injured when a red Perodua Axia heading towards Jalan Macalister rammed into the back of the truck where he was said to be clearing rubbish.
He was pinned between both vehicles and sustained serious injuries on his left side.
The car driver, a Vietnam woman, fled the scene following the incident and was admitted to a hospital later, seeking treatment for minor injuries.
Zaimani said that she was not found to be drunk in the incident.
He also said that she would be detained after she was discharged.
"Under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, we cannot remand the woman. So we will arrest her and record her statement," he added.
