KEPALA BATAS: A fisherman is feared missing after he fell into the sea when a strong wave struck the fishing boat he was on last night.
The incident happened at about 10.40pm when Muhamad Redzuwan Ahmad Shafie, 21, and two others were out at sea catching mackerels.
They had set off to sea at about 4pm, fishing in the waters of Muka Head, about 30 nautical miles from the Kuala Muda jetty in Penaga, near here, when the incident struck.
Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor said Redzuwan and another fisherman fell into sea while the skipper fell inside the boat when it was hit by the strong wave.
“The victim’s friend managed to hold onto the fibre boat and climbed onboard.
“However, the victim, who was not a good swimmer, was seen struggling to stay afloat before he was swept away by the strong current,” he said today.
Noorzainy said the two fishermen then piloted the boat to the location where the victim was last seen but could not find him anywhere.
“The incident was also witnessed by two other fishing boats which came to help but to no avail.
“They then alerted others on the shore about the incident,” he added.
