MTUC: No letter received from RoS regarding suspension

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) said it was unaware of any letter from the Registrar of Societies (RoS) stating that the congress had been suspended effective Dec 13.

MTUC secretary-general J. Solomon, when contacted today, said he had not received any letter from the RoS.

“I only heard that a photo of the letter is being circulated on WhatsApp. But I can confirm that I have not received any letter from RoS.

“Let me investigate this. I am trying to get in touch with RoS to check if there is such a letter,” he said.

MTUC president Datuk Abdul Halim Mansor, when contacted, did not comment on the letter but directed the New Straits Times to Solomon.

Meanwhile, MTUC deputy president Jaafar Majid who was also clueless about the letter said any letter to the congress would be issued to either the president or secretary-general.

Therefore, he said, he is unable to confirm or comment on the letter.

An image of the letter, allegedly issued from RoS Selangor to the congress, has been making its rounds on WhatsApp.

The letter said to be from RoS Selangor states that the MTUC’s registration would be suspended unless the congress could produce valid reasons to the registrar why such action should not to be taken.

The letter, however, made no mention as to why the congress was suspended.

It merely states that MTUC’s membership had been cancelled “for the sake of protecting the interests of the above named organisation from continuing to violate any of its rules.”

“Therefore, it is ordered that all activities by the organisation as named above, with the exception of replying to Notice 13(2) is suspended effective from the date of this letter’s issuance," the letter read.

The New Straits Times is still trying to reach the RoS and its branch in Selangor to verify the authenticity of the letter.

The MTUC is a federation of trade unions and registered under the Societies Act, 1955. It is the oldest National Centre representing Malaysian workers.

The Unions affiliated to MTUC represent all major industries and sector with approximately 500,000 members.
