Mustapa is Teraju chairman

KUALA LUMPUR: Former International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed has been appointed as chairman of the Bumiputera Agenda Steering Unit (Teraju) for a two-year term.

Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said in a statement today that Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has agreed to the appointment, which came into effect Dec 1, 2019.

“In line with Teraju’s role as a leading agency to drive and coordinate Bumiputera participation in the country’s economy, I believe he would be able to propel the Bumiputera economic agenda in line with the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030.

“With Mustapa at the helm, I believe that continuous efforts by Teraju will boost Bumiputera competitiveness, subsequently strengthening their position in the economy.

“Apart from the economic aspect, Teraju also has a big role to play in ensuring the well-being of Bumiputera and elevating their dignity to a higher level,” the statement read.

Mustapha has vast experience in economy, financial, education and trade.

He had served as International Trade and Industry Minister from 2009 to 2018, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry (2008-2009) and Higher Education Ministry (2006-2008), under the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration.

Mustapa was also the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department from 2000 to 2006, Second Finance Minister (1998-1999), Entrepreneur Development Minister (1995-1999) and Deputy Minister of Finance (1993-1995), also under BN.

He left Umno and by extension, BN, last year and later on joined Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).
