GEORGE TOWN: The collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government at the federal level is not likely to have any major impact on the Penang government.
This is because the PH component parties have a stronghold in the state, garnering 37 of the 40 seats, in the state legislative assembly.
DAP has 19 state seats, PKR (14 seats), two seats each for Parti Amanah Negara and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).
Umno and Pas have two seats and one seat respectively.
At the parliamentary level, DAP has seven seats, PKR (four), Bersatu (one) and Umno (one).
Sources said besides the Bersatu seat, the PH state government may possibly lose two or three state seats involving supporters of former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.
“Even then, they still hold the majority of seats,” the source said.
Meanwhile, Kedah Bersatu would await for the return of Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir to announce any changes in the state government.
State Women Development, Family and Community Committee chairman Halimaton Saadiah said Mukhriz was in contact with the state executive councillors yesterday through WhatsApp, and had asked for all to work as normal.
“He also said in the WhatsApp that he would return to Kedah soon to meet with all of us.
“So, I am just following instructions from the top. If Bersatu is out of the PH government at the federal level, automatically I am out.
“For now, I am still working as usual at Wisma Darul Aman,” she said when contacted.
Asked on the status of the Kedah state government with Bersatu quitting PH, Halimaton, who is also the state Bersatu Srikandi chief, said they would await for the formation of the new government at the federal level.
She said the coalition of Bersatu, Pas and Umno was enough to set up the state government with 23 state seats.
“Pas has 15 state seats, Bersatu six and Umno, two.
“This does not include seats from the pro-Azmin faction in PKR,” she added.
