Teenage sisters found drowned in Lipis river

KUANTAN: Two teenage sisters who went missing after being swept away by strong currents in Sungai Jelai in Kampung Tanjung Gahai, Lipis on Thursday, were found drowned today.

The body of Siti Suhaida Mohd Rosli, 15, was found by police at 8.40am today, about 1.5 kilometres from where she was last seen.

The body of her sister, Siti Nur Hidayah, 19, was found by firefighters at 9.20am about three kilometres from the scene.

“Their remains were sent to the Lipis Hospital for post-mortems and the search and rescue (SAR) operation was terminated,” Lipis district police chief Superintendent Azli Mohd Noor said.

He said the SAR operation was carried out by six officers and 48 personnel from the police, Fire and Rescue Department, and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM).

They were assisted by a number of villagers.

Siti Suhaida and Siti Nur Hidayah, along with their other siblings, were swimming at the river near the Kampung Tanjung Gahai recreational park when the incident occurred.

They were playing in the shallow section of the river before moving towards the middle when they were suddenly swept away by strong currents and disappeared.
