Woman missing after being swept away by river current, mother rescued

GERIK: A woman has been reported missing and is feared to have drowned after being swept away by strong currents while recreationally swimming with four family members in the Sungai Air Beruk, Jalan Padang Stang, Kampung Kerunai, here, today.

It is understood that the incident occurred at around 2.30pm when the family was swimming and engaging in water activities using floatation devices before the victim, Nur Arina Azizan, 20, became separated and was carried away by the current.

The victim's 48-year-old mother, who tried to assist her daughter, was also swept away by the current but was successfully rescued by villagers.

Gerik Fire and Rescue Station head, Mohd Azizan Aziz, said a team was dispatched to the location as soon as information about the incident was received at 3.11pm.

"One of the victims, the mother, was successfully rescued by members of the public and brought to the riverbank before the arrival of the fire and rescue team.

"Another victim, who is the daughter of the woman, continued to be swept away by the strong current and is feared to have drowned," he said today.

Following this, he said a search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched, involving surface searches around the location where the victim was feared to have drowned, as well as 'skin-diving' efforts.

"Also involved in the SAR operation were a kayaking team from the Kampung Kerunai Volunteer Fire Brigade (PBS), using nine kayaks to conduct searches along the river, along with assistance from other agencies.

"Teams from the K9 Unit were also activated to the scene, while the Water Rescue Team (PPDA) was already at the location," he added.

He said the operation was suspended at 7pm but some members were stationed at the Fire Control Post (PKB) that was set up. The SAR operation is scheduled to resume at 8am tomorrow.
