Physically-disabled Ipoh teen scores 10As in SPM [NSTTV]

IPOH: Despite being born physically-impaired, SMK Methodist (ACS) student Oscar Wong Kinn Lap beat the odds and scored 10As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

Wong, 18, said disability is not an obstacle to excel and described the continuous support from his family, teachers and friends as the driving force behind his SPM results.

"The subject that surprised me the most was Additional Mathematics. I was confident of passing, but did not expect to get A+.

"I am pleased with the results. All the hard work and sacrifice has paid-off. My mother always told me to be patient, as there are many people with disabilities but they have gone on to be successful," he said.

Wong said this when met at the state Education Department here where he received his results from Department director, Dr Mohd Suhaimi Mohamed Ali.

The eldest of three siblings, Wong was accompanied by his mother, Har Yin Chun, 39.

Wong said he consistently put in up to three hours of revision daily, and paid full attention during lessons in class.

"I want to further my study in the cyber security field because I love technology. I hope my dream will come true so that I can help my parents in the future," he said.

Meanwhile, Mohd Suhaimi said a total of 732 candidates out of 29,667 students who sat for the exam in Perak scored straight As.

"From this number, 15 candidates scored straight A+ in all subjects, compared to eight students in 2018.

"The State Average Grade (GPN) for 2019 is 4.91, compared to 5.01 in 2018; an increase of 0.10 points," he said.
