KUANTAN: The usually busy Jalan Mahkota, the main stretch in the heart of town here, was virtually empty today following the 14-day Movement Control Order nationwide to curb the spread of the Covid-19.
No vehicles were spotted on the stretch located near the district police station here while vehicles were occasionally spotted travelling along Jalan Bukit Ubi, Jalan Tun Ismail and Jalan Besar.
A handful of people were spotted at financial institutions and convenience stores, and majority of them who were wearing face masks left immediately after completing their chores.
Fruit stall operator Hussain Jamaluddin, 43, from Gambang said he was surprised to see the main road - Jalan Mahkota - empty of traffic.
"I came to town to buy some groceries and the roads were clear. It is good that people are obeying the order to remain at home.
"Majority of the shops are closed so one only needs to come to town to buy essential items or pack food. All the other premises are closed," he said.
Meanwhile, the Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK) has given the green light for vehicle workshops to operate between 10am and 3pm from today till March 31.
MPK posted a statement on the council's official Facebook page that the latest decision was to revise an earlier announcement by the government.
"The earlier decision has been revised by the higher management before deciding to allow certain premises to operate with conditions. Vehicle service centres, car workshops and tyre shops are allowed to operate between 10am and 3pm.
"Other decisions include financial institutions should limit the number of customers to only 10 people at the same time while mosques can only be opened for funeral services," said the statement.
