Malaysians in Canada urged to register with the high commission

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians in Canada are urged to register with the Malaysian High Commission in Ottawa to enable information to be channeled in a more effective and proactive manner when there is a disaster such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

Malaysian High Commissioner to Canada Datuk Nor Aini Abd Hamid said although the number of Covid-19 positive cases in the North American country had risen to 25,663 with 780 deaths, no Malaysian citizen or student was reported to have been infected so far.

She said it was important for Malaysians including students in the country to stay in touch with the high commission to ensure proper information and assistance when needed, especially in the event of any untoward incident.

“There are now 450 Malaysian students in Canada. Since the pandemic started, many have registered with the high commission and we welcome other Malaysians to do the same.

“I also urge parents to get in touch with their children in Canada and tell them to get in touch with the high commission in the event they need any aid,” she said in a statement today.

This includes creating group communications among the Canada based students via platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook.

“To ensure the health of Malaysian students is maintained we have already sent face masks, disinfectants and gloves to them.

"In addition, all information from the Canadian government regarding Malaysian students was also conveyed to them. The high commission will ensure that the welfare of the students is always taken care of, ” she said.

Meanwhile, philosophy doctorate student in Canada Azim Mohd Arshad said the situation in Ottawa and Canada was under control, even though the number of Covid-19 cases had been increasing.

“We are still able to purchase daily essentials and supplies are sufficient. The High commission is also playing an effective role.

“We have also received face masks, disinfectants and gloves. Thanks to the Foreign Ministry and the high commission in Canada,” he said.

For Fei Wen Lee, despite being abroad, the third-year University of Carleton student feels well taken care of by the Malaysian government.

“Thank you to the Malaysian government, the Foreign Ministry and the high commission. I have already received the supply of face masks and other items.

"Parents do not have to be concerned because the high commission here is taking care of us here," she said.
