KUALA LUMPUR: The Immigration Department raided the Kuala Lumpur wholesale market, near here, this morning, hauling up hundreds of migrants.
The surprise raid, which started at 8.30am, began when the department officers and its personnel surrounded the market and rounded up nationals from Bangladesh, India, Myanmar and Nepal.
Members of the media who were present were barred from going near the scene and stopped from taking pictures and video of the ongoing operations.
At about 11am, majority of the foreigners who had been inspected were seen being brought out of the market by the department's personnel.
They are believed to have flouted laws under the Immigration Act and Regulations 1959/1963.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said Police are assisting in the operations.
In a brief message to the media, Mazlan said several other agencies are also involved in the operations to provide security.
Apart from the police, the Armed Forces, Health Ministry and the Civil Defence Force had also been roped in the operations, which were ongoing as of 11.30am.
The department has yet to issue a statement.
