DENGKIL: A squatter settlement at Taman Ayer Hitam was raided by the Immigration Department early this morning.
Dubbed Op Pintu, personnel from the enforcement division began checking houses here from 3.30am.
While many were asleep and unaware, some foreigners attempted to hide when the authorities first came knocking.
Many of them were initially unwilling to cooperate with the Immigration checks, and some took as long as 20 minutes to finally allow the personnel to check them.
Selangor Immigration Department director Khairrul Aminus Kamaruddin said 80 personnel participated in the operation led by enforcement division chief Johari Supardi.
"They screened 89 foreigners, of which 49 were detained, to facilitate further investigations into various offences.
"Those detained involved Indonesians and Myanmar nationals who were in their 20's and 50's," he said, adding that they detained 30 men and 19 women.
He said among the offences included not having valid documents and overstaying.
"Our personnel conducted surveillance of the area for several weeks following a complaint about foreigners living there.
"Those detained will be taken to the Selangor Immigration Department headquarters for further action," he said.
