'School bus operators shouldn't charge parents while schools remain closed'

KUALA LUMPUR: Parents should not be made to pay for their children's school bus fees while the schools are still closed, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

"This is a different issue (from commercial transport operators raising fares). I have mentioned recently that this shouldn't have happened and the Transport Ministry should take action on this.

"We understand that the operators are facing losses as they don't have income, but they shouldn't be charging parents when they are not operating," the senior minister told a press conference in Putrajaya today.

On complaints of fare hikes imposed by some commercial transport operators, Ismail Sabri said the Transport Ministry would look into the matter and present its suggestions during the ministry's special committee meeting.

He said some operators imposed the fare hike as they had to reduce passenger capacity due to social distancing.
