KUALA TERENGGANU: A 25-year-old woman died at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) today, some 10 days after consuming contaminated 'puding buih' dessert.
The food poisoning victim from Marang died from multiple organ failure due to septic shock at 10.40am.
The deceased, together with several family members, were admitted to the same hospital after consuming the dessert that was bought online on May 22.
Her death was confirmed by the Local, Housing, Health and Environment state executive councillor Dr Alias Razak, making it the first fatality of the 'puding buih' case.
"Other victims warded at the same hospital and at private hospitals have recovered and discharged in stages," he said when met at the hospital.
Offering condolences to the deceased's family, Dr Alias said the state Health Department was in the midst of investigating the case and would take action against those responsible in selling the bad pudding.
It was reported the state health authorities had recorded 99 food poisoning cases believed to be caused by eating the local dessert.
It involved 20 families with 77 victims from Kuala Terengganu and 22 from Marang.
Bernama reported that the 'puding buih' trader had allegedly used eggs that were over two weeks past the expiry date when making the delicacy.
