MNCF: Use technology to fight increasingly tech-savvy criminals

JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MNCF) has urged authorities to weigh the use of high-tech gadgets such as drones to fight criminal activity, especially drug trafficking and smuggling.

MNCF senior vice chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the government should explore as many latest technologies as possible to ensure it stays ahead of increasingly tech-savvy criminals.

"Police in Johor recently uncovered a syndicate using drones to smuggle drugs between Johor Baru and Singapore with the arrest of two suspects.

"MNCF believes that this is an example of how the latest technology can be misused by certain parties to commit crimes. Based on this, MNCF is confident there is a possibility of more technology being used by criminals," Lee said in a statement.

He said the use of technology in law enforcement and crime prevention is advancing rapidly.

"Technology from drones and analysis and predictive methods, to biometrics can be used to improve efforts to ensure the safety of people," said Lee.

He added that authorities should be more aware of the latest trends in crime prevention, as technology is developing rapidly.
