Man loses RM138,580 in three hours after downloading APK file from Facebook

TANGKAK: A 63-year-old man lost RM138,580 in savings from two bank accounts within three hours after downloading an APK file from social media recently.

His ordeal began when he was browsing Facebook and was instructed to download an application to purchase groceries and kitchen supplies.

District police chief Superintendent Roslan Mohd Talib said the man complied with the instruction and proceeded to download the application, only to discover that the savings in his two bank accounts had decreased about three hours later.

"The man lodged a police report on the case on Dec 28," Roslan said in a statement today.

Roslan said the case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997 for unauthorised access with the intent to commit or facilitate the commission of an offence.

He also urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling for suspicious online purchase schemes.

Members of the public who become victims of scams are advised to immediately contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 for prompt action to block the outflow of money from the suspect's account.
