Co-curricular, sporting activities not allowed yet

PUTRAJAYA: Co-curricular and sporting activities cannot be held in schools yet despite the reopening of schools starting July 15, said Senior Education Minister Dr Radzi Jidin.

In a televised press conference today, Radzi said all remaining school students would only have in-class activities.

"Co-curricular and sports activities cannot be held yet, students and teachers will only come to school for teaching and learning (PdP).

"Schools will be informed when activities outside of the classroom can be held," he said.

Earlier, he announced that primary and secondary schools nationwide would reopen to welcome all students in phases beginning July 15.

The first phase of school reopening took place on June 24 for 500,444 students from over 2,500 schools taking their public examinations this year, namely Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM), Malaysian Vocational Certificate (SVM), Malaysian Higher School Certificate (STPM), Malaysian Higher Religious Certificate (STAM), and equivalent international school examinations.

Radzi said the second phase would see Form 6 (Semester 1), Form 1 to Form 4, transition classes, and Year 5 and Year 6 students starting schools on July 15.

The third phase, he said, starts on July 22 (Wednesday) and involves Year 1 to Year 4 pupils.

The ministry also unveiled three models for the reopening of schools, with each school being allowed to decide how they plan to hold classes.

The options include a single schooling session model, a two-session model, and a rotation model.

Radzi said schools would only be allowed to implement one model per school.

"We have discussed this matter and decided on these three models for schools to pick, based on their capacity.

"The ministry will publish the list of schools and their chosen models a week before schools reopen for parents to refer to," he added.
