Face masks in schools not compulsory, says Ismail Sabri

KUALA LUMPUR: It is not compulsory for students or teachers to put on a mask when they are in school, said Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

In a statement today, he said school administrators however need to prepare masks for students, teachers and staff in case they show any symptoms while at school.

He said as per the reopening guidelines set by the Education Ministry, schools must provide soap or hand sanitiser as well as check body temperatures and condition of everyone entering the school compound.

On the compliance of the Recovery Movement Control Order's (RMCO) standard operating procedures, the senior defence minister, said police nabbed 48 individuals for violating the SOPs yesterday.

"Five were remanded while 43 were slapped with compounds, they were all involved in activities that make social distancing difficult."

He said the compliance operation task force led by the police yesterday conducted 62,733 inspections to monitor and enforce the RMCO SOPs.

Checks were conducted at 3,939 supermarkets, 5,491 restaurants, 1,720 hawker stalls, 1,123 factories, 3,579 banks and 878 government offices nationwide.

Also inspected were 1,121 land transport terminals, 229 water transport terminals and 89 air transport terminals.

On the nation's border control, Ismail Sabri said police inspected 40,151 vehicles in 66 roadblocks, part of the Ops Benteng nationwide, to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the country particularly via lorong tikus.

He added that five foreigners were arrested for immigration offences.

Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri said 594 Malaysians returned from Singapore, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, Cambodia and Japan yesterday.

He said one was brought to hospital and 593 were ordered to undergo mandatory home quarantine after being screened at the Kuala Lumpur International Aiport and klia2.
