SLIM RIVER: Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir today admitted that his daughter and son-in-law were picked up by the police for breaching the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) rules.
The Jerlun member of parliament, who is also former Kedah Menteri Besar, expressed his disappointment with the duo who were detained during a recent raid at a pub in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur.
He said they deserved to be issued with the RM1,000 fine.
"It is true that my daughter and son-in-law were taken to the police station together with 27 others for breaching the curfew of RMCO.
"I had told my family members during this RMCO, don't breach any rules because we need to set a good example. I am sad and they deserve to be issued with the compound," he told reporters when met at Felda Besout 3, here, today.
Mukhriz thanked the police for taking stern and fair action against the duo.
"I would like to say thank you to the police for being fair in taking action. There was no element of reducing the compound. Both were issued with a RM1,000 compound each.
"Had they been given a 'discount, Tun (his father Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad) and I would have been accused of interfering in police business, asking them to give special treatment to my daughter and son-in-law," he said.
Asked whether the case would affect Independent candidate Amir Kusyairi Mohamad Tanusi on his ongoing campaign in the Slim by-election, Mukhriz replied in the negative.
"This has nothing to do with it. There's plenty of other issues out there that could have an impact on the Barisan Nasional candidate instead," he said.
It was reported yesterday that the daughter of a VIP was among 34 people arrested in a police raid on a pub in TTDI last Sunday.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said the VIP's daughter was among 29 individuals nabbed for patronising a pub beyond business operation hours permitted during the RMCO, which is in force until Aug 31.
On the VIP's daughter being detained and fined, Mazlan said City police does not practice double standards and would never compromise on any individual who breaches RMCO guidelines.
