Penang car tragedy: Third victim dies

SEBERANG JAYA: The death toll from a suspected carbon monoxide poisoning case in Penang has risen to three, after another victim died hours after being rushed to the hospital.

Nor Adilah Mohd Safwan, 21, died at 4.23pm at the intensive care unit of the Army Hospital in Lumut, Perak.

Her twin sister, Nor Aqilah Mohd Safwan, is still being treated at the intensive care unit of the Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Army Hospital in Kuala Lumpur.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shafee Abd Samad said they were alerted to Nor Adilah's death by her mother.

"As for her twin sister, she is still under close observation by doctors," he said.

The twins were with their two other friends, all college students, who had just completed their studies in pharmacy.

They were on a holiday in Pulau Jerejak and were traveling back to their homes in Sungai Petani, Kedah when they stopped at a petrol station in Sama Gagah to rest.

The four women were later found unconscious inside the Honda Odyssey at the parking lot of the petrol station.

One of the women, Sharifah Fariesha Syed Fathi, was found dead at the scene. Another woman, Ayuni Shazwanie Shabri, died later at the hospital.

Both were 21-years-old.

Meanwhile, Shafee said checks carried out on the vehicle by a Honda technician from the Bukit Mertajam branch found a possible leakage at the vehicle's exhaust.

"During inspection, the exhaust produced a sound and a large amount of smoke.

"As a result of the leakage, the smoke entered the car," he added.

It was also reported that Nor Aqilah, who was driving at the time, had stopped for a break after she complained of a headache and had vomited.
