Woman digs out WWII shell bomb near home

TASEK GELUGOR: A woman stumbled upon an old bomb, believed to be from the World War II era, at the compound of her kampung house in Permatang Berangan, here, yesterday.

Part of the bomb was left exposed following days of rain.

The woman, spotted the item yesterday afternoon and decided to dig further, only to find out that it was an old bomb.

She then related the matter to her 30-year-old daughter, who proceed to lodge a police report.

Seberang Prai Utara police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor said initial investigations showed the family had been renting the house for the past six years and no changes have been made to the original structure.

"Our team went to the site and confirmed that the bomb had actually been buried at the compound of the house for some time.

"The object appeared similar to a mortar bomb, however, our bomb disposal unit later confirmed it to be a shell bomb used during World War II," he said.

Noorzainy said police have safely removed the object, which was taken to the state police contingent headquarters.

"The bomb is expected to be detonated today.

On Saturday, a smoky old bomb was found during work to the seawall along Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah in Fort Cornwallis on Penang island.

Inspection at the site found a 0.3 metre-long old bomb under the soil.
