KUCHING: Sarawak has closed the border entrance with Indonesia until Dec 3 due to the increase in Covid-19 cases in Malaysia.
Also closed for the same period are ports involved in transactions with Indonesia and the Philippines
Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister and Chairman of the Border Committee, Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing, said the state had no choice but to act decisively to protect the people from the Covid-19 pandemic.
"We (the Border Committee) also recommend to the State Disaster Management Committee (SMDC) to tighten standard operating procedures (SOPs) for visitors from Sabah and the Peninsula.
"The move is necessary because a new wave of Covid-19 may strike our country," he said.
He also called for strict control measures to be implemented in workplaces and estates with many foreign workers.
"Now Sarawak is almost free from the epidemic, but it is feared that the situation would not last long if we are not prepared to implement strict measures to deal with it.
"It is better to implement strict preventive measures than regret later," he said.
