Fire ravages Johor Baru squarters, displacing 11 people

JOHOR BARU: Eleven people were only left with the clothes on their back when a fire broke out at a six-door squarters in Jalan Imam, Kampung Melayu Pandan here yesterday.

Johor Jaya Fire and Rescue station operation commander Sufian Md Lis said the premises was 90 per cent destroyed in the 10.13am incident.

A sundry shop operating near the premises, he said, was also 10 per cent damaged during the fire.

"There was no casualties reported," he said, in a statement.

Sufian said 33 firefighters from Johor Jaya, Tebrau, Larkin, and Mount Austin Fire and Rescue Stations were deployed to the scene to extinguish the fire.

Meanwhile, the state government has activated a temporary relief centre at Dewan Kampung Melayu Pandan to accommodate the residents affected by the fire.

Johor State Secretary Tan Sri Azmi Rohani, who also chairs the State Natural Disaster Management Committee, said the evacuation centre was activated at 4 pm yesterday.
