GEORGE TOWN: A landslide was reported on Penang Hill this afternoon following continuous heavy rain.
In the 3pm incident, a large boulder, between 1m and 1.5m in diameter, rolled down a slope near the playground to the road, destroying the metal railing along the way.
No one was injured in the incident.
Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) general manager Datuk Cheok Lay Leng said PHC staff members immediately covered the landslide area with tarpaulin sheets to prevent further erosion.
"Workers from the Public Works Department helped to remove the boulder using an excavator.
"So far, that is the only area affected by the landslide. We will conduct a thorough check when the weather permits," he told the New Straits Times.
Meanwhile, a similar incident was also reported in Changkat Delima 2, where a large boulder rolled down the slope, onto the road, disrupting the traffic flow.
Penang has been experiencing wet spell in recent weeks.
Earlier this morning, the Penang Island City Council also took to its Facebook page to caution the people to plan their journey after several roads were inundated in water.
Among them were Jalan Terengganu, Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Masjid Negeri, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and Jalan Kampung Jawa.
According to the weather forecast, Penang will be experiencing rain, showers and cloudy spell over the next few days.
A freak storm on Nov 4 and Nov 5, 2017, badly affected Penang Hill, resulting in more than 300 landslides on Penang Hill alone.
Huge boulders, fallen trees and debris were everywhere, cutting off access roads.
The funicular train service was also disrupted for two months then.
