KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry logged 589 new Covid-19 cases as of noon today, pushing Malaysia's total number of cases to 18,129.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 409 more patients have recovered and discharged from hospitals.
This is the highest number of Covid-19 recoveries in a single day since the outbreak started here, bringing the total number of recoveries to 12,014 or 66.3 per cent of the total number of cases in the country.
"The number of recoveries from the virus is the highest in a single day that has been recorded by the ministry to date," Dr Noor Hisham said in his daily press briefings today.
Meanwhile, 583 of the total new cases were due to local transmission, while the rest were imported, involving foreigners who were allowed to enter the country from Indonesia and Ukraine.
Dr Noor Hisham said Sabah recorded the highest number of new cases today at 304, followed by Selangor (150), Perak (52), Kedah (31), Penang (16), Negri Sembilan (11), Kuala Lumpur (nine), Labuan (six), Sarawak, Melaka and Kelantan (two each) and Putrajaya (one).
He said the country's death toll continued to rise to 170 after three more fatalities in Sabah were reported to the National Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre.
Among the victims was a 100-year-old woman who died at the Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan.
"A total of 5,945 cases are still being treated at healthcare facilities around the country, and 103 cases are being treated at Intensive Care Units, with 31 requiring breathing assistance."
