KUALA LUMPUR: Syarikat Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) has shut down its Sungai Selangor Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3 and Rantau Panjang water treatment plants (LRA) after discovering at 2am today that their raw water sources were polluted.
In a statement, Air Selangor said the move will cause water supply disruption to 1,196,457 account holders in 1,292 areas in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat starting today.
Air Selangor head of corporate communication Elina Baseri said as of 6.30am, the level of the threshold odour number (TON) at Sungai Selangor was 1 TON.
The water treatment plants are only allowed to operate when the reading is 0 TON.
"We have taken immediate action to dilute and flush the contaminants found by releasing raw water (by gravity) from Hybrid Off-River Augmentation System (HORAS) 600, with a capacity of 285 million litres per day. We have also released raw water from the dam at about 800 million litres per day.
"At the same time, Lembaga Urus Air Selangor has released raw water through the KL Larut pool pump, with a capacity of 336 million litres per day, for the same purpose.
"We understand that consumers need clean water now more than ever, especially with the sudden spike of Covid-19 cases and with the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) in place.
"We are doing our level best to ensure minimal effect on our consumers from these sudden LRA closures," she said in a statement.
Elina said Air Selangor has prepared water supply assistance by mobilising water tank trucks to affected areas, with priority given to critical premises such as hospitals and dialysis centres.
Consumers requiring water supply for emergency purposes, such as funeral arrangements, can contact 15300 for assistance.
The list of affected locations is available on all Air Selangor communication platforms, including Instagram and Twitter, on mobile applications, and at www.airselangor.com.
