Perak sultan grants royal pardon to two prisoners

IPOH: Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah has consented to reduce the prison sentence of two prisoners and allowed them to be released early in conjunction with his 64th birthday celebration tomorrow.

Perak Pardons Board secretary Datuk Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim said the two prisoners - whose respective jail terms were to end on May 18, 2022 and June 24, 2023, would be released tomorrow.

Ahmad Suaidi said the decision was made during a board meeting chaired by Sultan Nazrin on November 3.

"A total of 12 cases were presented for consideration and after reviewing a report from the Prisons Department, and upon advice of the Attorney-General as well as the board members, only the duo obtained pardons.

"Sultan of Perak is satisfied with the punishment undergone by the duo...they have undergone the rehabilation while serving their jail terms," he told reporters at the Laman Seri Ridzuan here, today.

Ahmad Suaidi said Sultan Nazrin has also reminded the people that a sentence imposed is intended to teach the community that the laws of the country are upheld.

"Sultan Nazrin also stresses that pardon or reduction of a sentence which has been decided by the court will only be considered when the prisoner reflects on their mistakes and repents. They must apologise and have good behaviour while in prison and show determination to start a new life," he said.

Meanwhile, in conjunction with the Sultan's birthday, Yasin recital and prayers will be held at Masjid Sultan Idris Shah II or Masjid Negeri here, tomorrow.

Sultan Nazrin is expected to attend the ceremony and all mosques in the state are required to hold Yasin recital and prayers.
