Couple arrested hours after leaving dead baby outside Sg Way mosque

PETALING JAYA: A young foreign couple had left their dead four-month-old baby in a bag outside a mosque in Sungai Way yesterday and pleaded for a proper Muslim burial for the infant.

The couple had also slipped in a heart-wrenching note into the bag, on which they wrote an apology over their inability to care for the child and lack of knowledge in burial rites.

The mosque's imam, who found the body at 8.45pm, immediately contacted the police.

Petaling Jaya district deputy police chief Superintendent Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said police found the couple at a hotel in SS3 and arrested them at 2.45am.

"The couple claimed they neither have a proper place to live in nor money to take the child to a hospital.

"We managed to find them based on recordings obtained from the mosque's closed-circuit television camera."

Ku Mashariman said the couple admitted to abandoning the body at the mosque.

He said the two had been remanded for four days for investigations under Section 318 of the Penal Code.
