Newborn abandoned outside Kuantan children's home found after nine hours

KUANTAN: A newborn girl, with her umbilical cord attached, was found crying outside the gate at the Alor Akar Special Child Care Centre several metres from a police logistics complex here yesterday.

The baby was found inside a black travelling bag which was left exposed about 7.30am.

Kuantan police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said a staff at the child care centre discovered the baby abandoned inside a bag outside the premises before he alerted police.

"The staff claimed he heard sounds of a baby crying when he stepped out of the premises. He found a baby abandoned inside the bag.

"A shirt was found beside the baby but the child was not wearing anything. There were no injury marks but the skin had turned blue believed due to the cold temperature," he said in a statement.

Wan Mohd Zahari said the closed-circuit television camera at the children's home showed the baby was left behind by a person at about 10am on Wednesday (Sept 4).

"The footage showed a vehicle arriving before a man walked towards the home and left something before returning to the vehicle," he said, adding the case is investigated under Section 371 of the Penal Code for child abandonment.

Wan Mohd Zahari said the baby was taken to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here and the Welfare Department has been informed.
