Social gatherings, religious events among factors for recent Covid-19 clusters

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry today reminded Malaysians to adhere to Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) when attending events or gathering at public areas to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this was because the new clusters recorded today were mostly the result of social gatherings that saw people flouting the SOPs.

"Based on reports, the gatherings were also attended by those who displayed symptoms and these include family gatherings, celebrations and religious events," he said in a statement.

He said the Enggor cluster in Perak and Indah Mas cluster in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor were sparked by community infection at family gatherings.

Similarly, the Inai and Jambul clusters in Sabah recorded infections that started during a certain celebration.

"There are also clusters that originated from religious ceremonies, including the Mentari cluster (Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur) that originated from a funeral and was attended by family members and friends in Nilai, Negri Sembilan," he said.

Dr Noor Hisham pointed out that physical distancing would be hard to practice in confined and crowded spaces and urged the public to take the SOP measures seriously.

"As we all know, Covid-19 is transmitted from one individual to another through respiratory droplets; when a person coughs, sneezes, talks and in close contact. If the physical distance between an individual and another individual is less than one meter, the risk of infection is higher.

"It is very important for us to do our part to protect ourselves, family and the community from infection. Just be mindful of your surroundings." he said.
