[UPDATED] National Social Policy reflects our commitment to building more prosperous nation, says Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR: The newly launched National Social Policy 2030 supports the government's efforts and strategies in strengthening social development, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said the policy was proof of the government's commitment to building a more prosperous, inclusive and progressive nation.

"It is the result of efforts and cooperation among various parties, including more than 10 ministries, government agencies, the private sector and the community.

"We must work to develop Malaysians who uphold noble values as the foundation of life.

"That's our mission together, building a society that is resilient, progressive, responsible, compassionate, and ethical," Zahid said in his speech at the launching of the policy at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur today.

Zahid, who is also the National Social Council chairman, said the policy will serve as an umbrella policy framework supporting the government's efforts and strategies to strengthen social development, ultimately making Malaysia more prosperous and harmonious.

With effective policy implementation and enforcement, Zahid said he believed that Malaysia could improve its ranking in the Social Progress Index from 54th place to among the top 25.

He said the National Social Policy 2030 will set the nation's social direction – as well as identify and address social issues holistically.

"In facing the wave of digital technology and communication, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), a new approach must be strengthened to address social issues and advance this agenda in pursuit of the nation's prosperity.

"I believe that in our efforts to achieve developed nation status, the foundation lies in cultivating a first-class mindset, mentality, and attitude, which starts from an early age."

The policy outlines four thrusts, namely, ensuring the basic needs of individuals, families and community are fulfilled; developing people's potential in order to achieve a prosperous life; strengthening family and community institutions as the country's social support system; and fostering social responsibility and the integration of people.

Seventeen core fields had been identified to support the four thrusts and ensure the policy is implemented effectively.

They are housing, water and sanitation; nutritious food, public safety, spiritual, values and culture; health, employment, education, social protection, technology, family, environmental sustainability, population, social equitability, social participation, social integration and governance.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said four clusters would be established based on the identified fields.

She said different ministries would be responsible for implementing initiatives under the policy, ensuring that integrated efforts instead of them working in silos.
