KUALA LUMPUR: The government has allowed vehicle manufacturers and assemblers to resume their operations from today.
This follows an amendment to the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (measures within infected local areas) (Movement Control) Regulations 2021.
In a Federal Government Gazette published by the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC), Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba had gazetted the regulations after exercising the powers conferred by subsection 11(2) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 [Act 342].
The regulations came into force on Jan 16 this year, according to the AGC document seen by the New Straits Times.
It said that automotive (vehicles and components) industries are included as "essential" for the manufacturing and production sectors; while maintenance and repair fall under the services category.
It was reported that auto manufacturers here such as Honda Motors, Toyota Motors and Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd had stopped production at several plants on Thursday after a new directive was enforced banning them from operating.
Automotive sales and after-sales services, however, were allowed to operate amid the second phase of the Movement Control Order (MCO).
