Penang Bridge fire: TNB probing incident, apologises for inconvenience caused

PRAI: The power cable fire on the Penang Bridge this afternoon involved a 132kV cable from the Bukit Tengah to Bayan Mutiara transmission main intake, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) said today.

In a statement following the incident, the power utility company said the fire was detected at about 4pm at Km3.2 of the bridge.

TNB grid chief officer Datuk Ir Husaini Husin said they are still investigating the cause of the blaze.

"Electricity supply to all users in the state is stable.

"We will expedite repair works of the damaged cable," he said.

Husaini said TNB is working closely with police, the Fire and Rescue Department and Plus to control the fire to enable traffic flow to return to normal.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused as a result of this incident," he added.

It was reported earlier that a power cable caught fire on the Penang Bridge just before the evening peak hour today, causing massive traffic jams spanning several kilometres on both sides of the bridge.

Black smoke was seen billowing at Km3.3 from the underside of the bridge where the cable was located.
