Police: Harsh action awaits those spreading fake news on vaccination

KUALA LUMPUR: Action will be taken against those disseminating fake news on Covid-19 vaccinations, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said today.

"Investigation papers will be opened should police receive reports on the issue. The case will be investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"To date, police have yet to receive any report on the issue," he said in a statement.

Acryl Sani said police advise the public not to make any statement that would create confusion.

The National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme officially kicked off nationwide yesterday after Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin took his first vaccination.

Selangor will begin its vaccination exercise today, followed by Pahang, Sarawak and Terengganu on Feb 26; Labuan (Feb 27); Kedah and Penang (Feb 28); Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Johor, Perak and Perlis (Mar 1), Kelantan, Melaka and Negri Sembilan (Mar 2) and Sabah (Mar 4).
