Extension for renewal of non-commercial vehicle driving license

KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry has decided to extend the exemption for renewing Malaysian Driving License (LMM) and Motor Vehicle License (LKM) involving non-commercial vehicles, effective from April 1 to May 31, 2021.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the decision was taken in light of the various Movement Control Orders still being enforced nationwide.

"All drivers must ensure their motor vehicles, that have been or going to be used on the road throughout the relevant period, possess valid motor vehicles insurance coverage starting from the original expiry date of the LKM, and must have with them their insurance e-cover notes, either to display on their vehicles or present a copy of the document to enforcement personnel upon request.

"Individuals whose LMM or LKM expire between Feb 1 and March 31, 2021, must renew their respective licences within 60 days from April 1 to May 31, 2021.

"Individuals whose LMM or LKM expire between April 1 and May 31, 2021, must renew their respective licences within 60 days from June 1 to July 31, 2021.

"Failure to renew within the stipulated period will result in a penalty," he said in a statement today.

Wee said this exemption is similar to the one that was previously given in March 2020, as it is aimed at reducing crowding at public places for the government to break the Covid-19 infection chain.

"Therefore, a period of 60 days will be given to the public after the respective exemption period to complete their renewal process," he said.

However, Wee said the exemption does not apply to owners of commercial vehicles' LKM and holders of Vocational Licenses (PSV/GDL).

This is because their related renewal services were permitted to be provided under the Schedule of Essential Services of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within Infected Local Areas) (Movement Control) Regulations 2021.

"Renewal for these services can be done at all Road Transport Department (JPJ), Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), Sabah's Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) and Sarawak CVLB offices throughout the MCO period.

"All Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centres (Puspakom) are also open to cater to the relevant services," he said.

Wee also advised the public to stay safe on the roads by driving responsibly and by complying with all travel Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that the National Security Council (NSC) has announced.
