KUALA LUMPUR: An accident along Jalan Ampang, here, last night claimed the lives of a 14-day old baby and her mother.
The newborn, her mother and two other family members were in a car travelling from Ampang to Lembah Jaya when the accident happened at 10pm.
The baby was believed to have been flung out of the vehicle in the crash.
Ampang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Farouk Eshak said in the accident, the car, driven by the baby's father, had smashed through the road divider, landing in the opposite lane.
The 34-year-old father and another toddler sustained injuries.
"The mother who is also the wife to the driver was identified as an Indonesian citizen, aged 28. She was found trapped in the front passenger seat and was confirmed dead at the scene.
"Her 14-day-old baby daughter was confirmed dead while receiving treatment at the Ampang Hospital emergency department," he said in a statement today.
Farouk added that the other toddler in the vehicle was identified as the couple's four-year-old son.
"The two victims are currently being treated at the Ampang Hospital's emergency department and are reportedly stable.
"Witnesses are encouraged to come forward and share relevant information on the accident by calling the Ampang Jaya traffic investigation officer Inspector Nur Nadzirah Abdul Rahim at 012 4401093," he said.
The case is investigated under Section 41(1) Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
