MASJID TANAH: A chicken processing factory in Kawasan Perindustrian Masjid Tanah, which is the largest in the district, was ordered to close until June 4.
This comes after 175 workers, mostly foreigners, tested positive for Covid-19.
State Health and Anti-Drugs Committee chairman Datuk Rahmad Mariman however said the infection was among the workers and no cluster has been assigned by the health department.
"They will be quarantined at the Covid-19 Low Risk Quarantine and Treatment Centre (PKRC).
"The state government is also discussing with the company's management to shift the workers involved to the Melaka Development Corporation owned housing unit near the industrial zone.
"This is because their existing hostel for foreign workers is unsuitable," he said.
He informed that swab tests were still ongoing for 600 more workers.
Yesterday, Melaka recorded two new clusters – the Batu Berendam Industry cluster in Melaka Tengah involving a factory, and the Taman Kesang Indah cluster in Jasin involving a family.
According to the state health department's statement, the source of the outbreak at the workplace cluster is still under investigation but preliminary results found it was due to its workers not observing physical distancing.
A total 13 workers tested positive and 82 negative while the remaining 36 are pending results.
The Taman Kesang Indah cluster was detected due to a group breaking-fast activity between a close relative and the family.
26 confirmed cases were detected, 19 negative while 11 more are pending results.
In total, 175 new cases were detected yesterday with 65 from the Alor Gajah district, 75 from Melaka Tengah and 35 from Jasin.
From that, 170 are local cases, three imports and two more involving detainees.
