5,803 new infections today [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has recorded 5,803 new Covid-19 infections with 81 deaths over the past 24-hours, bringing the total number of cases to 728,462 since the pandemic started last year.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Selangor was the state with the highest number of daily new cases and fatalities.

As of noon today, 2,108 new cases and 30 deaths were recorded in Selangor.

He said apart from the 30 deaths recorded in Selangor, 14 were reported in Kuala Lumpur, Johor (12), Negri Sembilan (nine), Sarawak (five), Pahang and Melaka (three each), Labuan (two) and each in Penang, Kedah and Terengganu.

"Of the fatalities, nine cases were brought in dead, involving victims aged 26 and 86. Only one of them, a 86-year-old Malaysian was without underlying health problem," he said in a statement today.

Death toll is now at 4,884 or 0.67 per cent.

Of the new cases, 10 were imported cases including three in Selangor, six in the capital and one in Sarawak, involving three Malaysians and seven foreigners.

A total of 5,193 Covid-19 patients have been recovered and discharged, active cases now at 60,646.

Dr Noor Hisham said 866 cases were being treated at the intensive care units with 435 of them on ventilator support.

Meanwhile, 14 new clusters were identified today, including nine workplace, two detention centre, and two community and one high-risk group clusters. Malaysia now has 868 active clusters.

These clusters had so far contributed a total of 403 cases, namely 281 cases from workplace clusters, detention centres (30), community (57) and high-risk groups (35).

The workplace clusters were the Industri Tanjung Suria, Cybersouth Utama construction site and Jalan Enam Salak Tinggi clusters in Selangor; Johor (PLO Jalan Perak and Perindustrian Bakri Satu); Kuala Lumpur (Pintasan Segambut construction site); Penang (Jalan Usaha Jaya); Melaka (Industri Serkam 2); and Kelantan (Bandar Rantau Panjang).

The two detention centre clusters were Penjara Jalan Harapan 2 in Gombak, Selangor and Tembok Tawau in Sabah.

The community clusters were the Permatang Pasir Bachok cluster in Kelantan that is linked to visiting and the Nyelutong cluster in Sarawak that is related to a funeral.

The sole high-risk group cluster was the Changkat Intan cluster in Perak, which involved workers and patients of a medical centre in Changkat Kong, Teluk Intan.
