All adults in Malaysia to be fully vaccinated by October

KUALA LUMPUR: All adults in Malaysia will be fully vaccinated by October, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

In a Facebook post today, the Prime Minister attributed this to expediting the Covid-19 National Immunisation Programme (NIP), following the discovery of more aggressive variants and the sharp increase in positive cases.

He said 100 per cent of all adult population in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur will receive at least one dose of vaccine as of Aug 1, under the "Operasi Lonjakan Kapasiti".

As for Sarawak, Muhyiddin said 100 per cent of the adult population will receive at least one dose of vaccine by the end of August.

The Prime Minister said based on the original schedule, 80 per cent of the country's population would receive a complete dose by the first quarter of 2022.

However, the target was then accelerated to December this year.

"Almost all states will record vaccination rates exceeding 50 per cent by the end of August, and 70 per cent by September.

"This, following an increase in capacity to achieve inoculation rate at 500,000 doses daily."

He said a major portion of the vaccines ordered would be made up of Pfizer, with the remainder being made up of Sinovac (23.4 per cent); AstraZeneca (10 per cent); CanSino (10.9 per cent) and 10 per cent from the Covid-19 Vaccine Global Access facility (Covax).

"To date, we have received 20 million doses," he said.

Muhyiddin added Malaysia would also receive another 30 million doses by month-end, 40 million doses in August, 53 million doses (September), and 58 million doses in October.

"The remaining doses will be received between November and January next year," he said.
