Police yet to identify charred remains inside Toyota Vios

GEORGE TOWN: Police have urged those with missing family members to come forward to assist in investigation following the recovery of three charred remains inside a Toyota Vios, which rammed into a tree before catching fire at Jalan Masjid Negeri here early this morning.

Police also urged those who have any information about the incident to contact any of the police station.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong said at about 3.05am today, police received a call about an accident involving a Toyota Vios, which was believed to have skidded and rammed into a tree at the junction of Jalan Masjid Negeri/Jalan Tembaga here.

"When we arrived at the scene, we found that the car was burnt more than 90 per cent. The fire was brought under control at about 3.20am.

"Initial investigation revealed that there were three people, including the driver, inside the car.

"All the victims were burnt nearly 90 per cent, and they were extricated and brought out at about 5.49am," he said today.

The remains have been sent to the Penang Hospital Forensic Unit for post-mortem.

"For now, we are still investigating the cause of the crash and trying to identify the victims.

"The case is probed under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Early this morning, it was reported that three people were killed when the Toyota Vios they were in rammed into a tree before catching fire.

The Jalan Perak fire and rescue station was alerted to the incident at about 2.55am.
