Vaccinated individuals make up almost 40 per cent of new Covid-19 cases in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said out of the 2,578 new infections today, 1,018 cases comprised vaccinated patients.

Masidi said 402 of the 1,018 had received one dose of the vaccine while 616 were fully vaccinated.

This, he said indicated that non-compliance of standard operating procedures (SOP) could still lead to risk of infection for those who have been fully vaccinated.

"Another 782 positive cases involved unvaccinated people, while 778 cases involved those who were not eligible for the vaccine," he said in a statement.

With close contacts still the main contributor to the caseload, Masidi reminded those who had either been vaccinated or otherwise, to strictly comply with the SOP.

"Close contacts contributed 62.26 per cent or 1,605 cases of the caseload while symptomatic category or sporadic infections registered 742 cases, or 28.78 per cent.

"Only 30 cases or 1.16 per cent were from the existing clusters. Another 179 cases from other categories while 22 were detected through targeted screening," he said.

Masidi added that the number of Covid-19 cases in Sabah continued its downward trend even though it still recorded more than 2,000 cases including backlogged cases.

However, he said, Sabah's daily fatalities saw a record today from its previous high of 41 cases on Aug 27.

"Sabah registered 46 fatalities today. Tawau recorded the highest number of deaths with 11 cases, followed by 10 deaths in Kota Kinabalu, nine in Sandakan, three each in Tuaran and Keningau and two each in Kinabatangan, Penampang and Kalabakan.

"Meanwhile, Papar, Kudat, Putatan and Lahad Datu recorded one death each," he said.

On backlogged cases, 41.27 per cent (1,064 cases) out of the caseload were cases registered after two to three days, 6.63 per cent (171 cases) between four and five days and 8.03 per cent (207 cases) were backlogged over five days.

Masidi added that 97.24 per cent of patients today were in category 1 (no symptoms) and category 2 (mild symptoms) and these categories do not need hospital treatment.

"Some 620 of the new patients fall under category 1, 1,887 under category 2, 13 under category 3, seven under category 4 and 25 under Category 5, whereas 26 cases are still under investigation," he said.

Of the 2,578 new cases, he said 2,356 patients (91.4 percent) were Malaysians and 222 patients were foreigners.

As of yesterday, 56.3 per cent of the adult population in Sabah have received their first dose of the vaccine and 37.1 per cent are fully vaccinated.
