KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition to the Selangor government's plan to degazette more than 500ha of the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve is picking up steam, with Muafakat Nasional being the latest to join the fray.
The Umno-Pas political alliance, in a joint statement today, said although Selangor's Pakatan Harapan administration has said it would review the decision, the plan, which was announced in the recent state legislative assembly, should be shelved altogether.
"The degazettement of the peat forest was approved during (the state council executive meeting) MMKN 17/2021 dated May 5, with the approval to degazette (the land) recorded in the Selangor state gazette on Aug 12, coming into force with immediate effect.
"The act of sidelining protests, as well as public objection and the voices of state assemblymen from both the government and opposition, is irresponsible and is a reflection of an administration, led by Datuk Seri Amiruddin Shari as the Menteri Besar, which no longer has integrity (it claimed to have) as stated in its manifesto," read the statement.
The joint statement quoted Selangor Umno liaison committee chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar, who is Tanjung Karang member of parliament, and Selangor Pas commissioner Datuk Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi, who is the Sijangkang assemblyman.
Muafakat Nasional urged the state government to respect the views of the people and cancel the degazettement without further delay and politicising.
The state government, it said, has a duty to uphold good governance with high integrity to ensure a meaningful and good quality of life among the people.
