Jakim provides counselling to individuals suffering from mental illness [NSTTV]

KOTA BARU: More than 30 counselling officers have been appointed by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) to help individuals suffering from mental illness such as depression and anxiety.

Deputy Minister in Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Ahmad Marzuk Shaary said the counselling officers under the department were appointed last year.

"They have been put in charge of a special hotline under JAKIM. Their jobscope is to deal with those suffering from (mental) illness and depression following the Covid-19 pandemic.

"They were directed to assist the people and (try) to solve their problems as much as they can so that these individuals will not take drastic action while having depression.

"If the officers are not able to resolve their problems, they can refer them to the religious authorities in their respective states," he said after presenting cash aid and food donation to trishaw riders in Kota Baru today.

The programme was jointly organised by Kelantan Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Yadim) and the state branch of Bank Islam's Club.

Also present were state Yadim manager Mahadi Awang and Kelantan Bank Islam manager Nurul Ain Abg Latip.

Ahmad Marzuk said the government would provide necessary help to this group to ease their burden.

"Malaysia is a government that is concerned of its people. Compared to other countries, the Malaysian government will spend vast amount (of money) for the people's wellbeing and also for their care," he said.

Yesterday, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said those battling depression and anxiety were urged to talk to someone about their troubles.

In a 30-second video in conjunction with World Suicide Prevention Day, Khairy reminded those in need that help was available, sharing the contact numbers of Talian Kasih at 15999, and Befrienders at 03-76272929.
