Malaysians cheer as green light given for interstate travel

KUALA LUMPUR: The green light from the government on interstate travel starting tomorrow has seen Malaysians cheering.

Checks on various social media platforms saw many Malaysians thankful with the go-ahead, after months of not being able to meet their parents and families at their respective hometowns, as well as go on vacations.

Zizan Jer said the announcement was long-awaited good news.

"Malaysians have been waiting for this moment (interstate travel) and we must take this opportunity. Thank you so much."

Noor Fazira Othman said; "Finally, we can go back to our hometowns. Somehow, it feels like Hari Raya. Stay safe throughout your journey everyone."

Also excited with the announcement is Shanta Kumari, who said it was a great decision by the government to finally allow interstate travel.

"Hope that everyone will take care and always follow the standard operating procedures (SOP) at all time."

Chong LC said: "There will be heavy traffic at highways starting midnight."

Zara Amaira said; "Let's pack out bags. We leave at midnight."

Another user Margaret Goh said the public, however, must stay vigilant despite the green light.

"Now, with interstate travel allowed...people please stay vigilant and strictly follow SOP as the virus is already in our community.

"Stay safe everyone and take care."

Earlier today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri during a special press conference aired live said interstate travel will be allowed for those who have been fully vaccinated starting tomorrow.

The decision to lift the restriction on interstate movement, said Ismail Sabri, was made after the vaccination coverage involving the adult population who have been fully inoculated in the country reached 90 per cent.

The ban on interstate travel was imposed starting Jan 13 this year.

Last year, a ban on interstate travel was first imposed on March 18, following the implementation of the Movement Control Order to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Previously, several highway operators had said the traffic was expected to increase when interstate travel resumes.

Plus Malaysia Bhd said traffic at the North-South Expressway is expected to increase between 1.1 million and 1.3 million vehicles daily when interstate travel resumes, while at Kuala Lumpur – Karak Expressway and East Coast Expressway (Phase 1) the traffic is expected to increase to between 150,000 and 160,000 vehicles.
