Flood victims back at relief centre 8 days after returning home

RANTAU PANJANG: Mariam Ahmad was among 33 flood victims who had returned to their homes in Kampung Tok Deh after the flood receded on Nov 26.

The 80-year-old and other villagers had been evacuated to a flood relief centre at SK Tok Deh here after their houses were inundated during the first wave of flood last month.

However, Mariam was forced to relocate to the same flood relief centre today after the second round of flood hit the village.

Mariam and the 32 other flood victims were sent to the relief centre in stages since 8am today.

The 33 victims including 12 children, were from six families.

Mariam said she and five other family members returned to the relief centre about 10am today.

"During the first round of flood at the end of last month, we were at the relief centre for five days.

"We returned home on Nov 26, but were forced to move back here today after the Lanchang river overflowed its bank yesterday following heavy rain since Wednesday."

Another flood victim Nurul Atikah Abdul Rashid said it was normal for her and other flood victims to move in and out of relief centres more than once during the monsoon season.

"It's normal for us to evacuate our houses and come to this relief centre every time the yearly flood occurs.

"We expected that we will come back to this flood relief centre when we returned to our homes nine days ago," said the housewife.

Nurul Atikah, 21, is seeking shelter at the flood relief centre with her husband and their two-year-old son.
