Petronas is largest petroleum product sales tax contributor to Sabah's coffers

KOTA KINABALU: Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd and its parent company Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) are the largest contributors of sales tax on petroleum products to Sabah's coffers.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the companies paid RM444.5 million and RM429.9 million respectively out of the total RM1.562 billion collected in-state sales tax for petroleum products between April last year to November this year.

He said the rest of the petroleum product sales tax were contributed by Conoco Malaysia (RM212.8 million), Sabah Shell (RM210.7 million), PTTEP Malaysia (RM76 million), Petronas Floating LNG 1 (RM63.6 million), Petronas Floating LNG 2 (RM56.6 million). ) Repsol (RM31.3 million), PT Pertamina Malaysia (RM28.9 million), ConocoPhilips (RM7.7 million) and E&P Malaysia (RM0.46 million).

"This is the total collection of state sales tax on petroleum products amounting to RM1.562 billion until November this year," he said in replying to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (Warisan - Senallang) on the state sales tax for petroleum collected by the Sabah government so far in the state assembly sitting today.

Earlier, state Assistant Finance Minister Jasni Daya in replying to the original question from Phoong Jin Zhe (DAP - Luyang), said the state sales tax on petroleum products which came into effect in April 2020 was imposed on petroleum crude oil and natural gas or liquefied natural gas at a rate of five per cent for each product involved.

He said the original estimate of tax collection for this year was at RM1.25 billion, but due to the increase in the price of the commodity, the previous estimate was revised and increased to RM1.4 billion.

"I am pleased to inform that for this year, as of Nov 28, 2021, the government has received tax payments of RM1.385 billion or 98.9 per cent of the Revised Estimate on this tax collection.

"If calculated since this tax came into effect in April 2020, then the total tax collected so far is RM1.562 billion, where in 2020, the collection was RM177.88 million," he said.
