Ranau road needs immediate repair to boost tourism

KOTA KINABALU: Ranau is one of the famous destinations for both domestic and foreign tourists in Sabah.

The bad road conditions however, may spoil tourists' holidays and affect the district's tourism prospects, said the Deputy Information Chief of PKR Sabah State Leadership Council (MPN) Thonny Chee.

"Sabah PKR urges the Federal and State Works Ministry to pay attention to the maintenance of the road from Tuaran to Ranau which is the main route for the people here as well as foreign tourists.

"We urge the Federal government to increase the Federal Road Maintenance allocation in the state by focusing on key routes especially the critical areas that need immediate attention," he said in a statement today.

Chee recalled his visit to Kundasang and Ranau last Saturday, where he found out that the road conditions were getting worse.

"Some areas are critical and dangerous and need immediate maintenance before unwanted things happen.

"We do not want this road issue to affect the Sabah government's efforts in realising the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Roadmap which included tourism sector as its key focus areas," he said adding that it should be addressed as soon as possible.

"Finally, we ask the Ranau Member of Parliament and the State Assembly members to voice this issue in Parliament, the State Legislative Assembly, and the Cabinet Meeting for immediate action."

According to Chee, only 48 per cent of roads were paved out of 22370.95 km of roads in Sabah.
